The Iredell County Sheriff's Office arrested Matthew Marek, of Statesville, in connection with a rash of vehicle break-ins on Bethesda and Treeline Roads.

On Sept. 29 deputies received a call from a man who told them that an unknown male rode a bicycle to his home. The suspect asked if the resident was interested in buying a digital camera and GPS device for $100. The man offered $75 and the suspect agreed.

The resident then drove the suspect to the Kangaroo store on Highway 70 to get cash from the ATM to pay the suspect. He then took the suspect back to his home, where the suspect left on his bicycle.

The resident looked into the camera case and discovered business cards belonging to Statesville R&L public safety reporter Donna Swicegood. He then called and reported the incident.

Deputies went to Swicegood's home and found that her vehicle had been broken into.

Detective Mark Nicholson viewed video surveillance footage from the Kangaroo store and recognized the suspect as Marek, who had been interviewed prior to this incident in connection with other area break-ins.

Marek was placed under a $10,000 bond and charged with three counts of breaking and entering and felony larceny.
