Raiders almost pull upset, fall in PKs

North Iredell gave the No. 3 ranked 3A team in the state all it could handle Saturday, but couldn't quite pull off the upset.

The teams were tied 1-1 through regulation, overtime and sudden death before Robinson prevailed 5-4 in penalty kicks.

"That was the best game we played this season by far," Raiders coach Stewart Kincaid said. "The guys just played their hearts out."

North (16-6), the No. 2 seed from the North Piedmont Conference, trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Then things got really interesting.

Roger Vargas knotted the score with a goal on a beautiful free kick from Tony Mendoza.

The score stayed 1-1 through the end of the game.

The teams played two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden death periods before going into PKs.

Travis Laws made a great deflection on the first shot, but it still was able to clear the line for a goal.

Keenan Watson, Garrett Huff, Mendoza and Josh Lowry all connected on penalty kicks for the Raiders.

Laws was brilliant in goal and made a number of big saves, including stopping a penalty kick in the first half that kept the score 1-0.

"It was a tough loss, but we definitely proved we can play with any team in the state," Kincaid said. "I'm really proud of the team."
