Students send care packages to troops

Claire Spence's American Renaissance School kindergarten class received an important life lesson about giving — and it didn't come from inside the walls of a classroom.

On Monday, the school's common area bustled with energetic children who ran about with their outstretched arms filled with packs of gum, bags of candy, boxes of note paper and a myriad of other items.

The students packed 16 boxes of goodies that will be sent to American troops in Iraq.

Student Veda Pippin, 5, said she was packing boxes because the troops are "helping us."

"They save us and kill bad guys so we won't get hurt," she said.

The little ones stuffed boxes to the brim with snacks, first-aid kits, hand sanitizer, paper, writing utensils and more.

Some of the kids stood on chairs and tables, balancing themselves on their tippy toes to fill the boxes.

The students will load the boxes onto wagons and transport them to a local post office today to be shipped to Marines from North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee who are stationed in Iraq.

Spence said she wanted her class to do something to support the community.

"I hope they learn the importance of giving and supporting the troops, and realize a need to help others," she said.

Kailise Steele, 5, said the troops work for everyone else, and she wanted to work for them.

"(The boxes are) going to the troops because they work hard for us," she said.
