Simultaneous ceremonies in Mooresville and Statesville today – Veterans Day -- will offer area residents an opportunity to honor past and present members of the armed forces.
At 11 a.m. at Glenwood Memorial Park in Mooresville, the area's VFW and American Legion posts will preside at the cemetery's annual holiday salute of America's veterans.
The Mooresville High School Naval Jr. ROTC color guard will be featured at the event.
At Mitchell Community College in Statesville, also at 11 a.m., World War II veteran Andrew L. Pendleton of Statesville will be the keynote speaker at the college's annual Veterans Day program on the Circle in downtown Statesville.
Pendleton served in the U.S. Army Air Force in North Africa and Italy in World War II. He flew 27 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air medal (three times), European Service medal with 10 battle stars, and the World War II Victory Medal Presidential Unit Citation (three times).
The program will also honor local veterans including members of MCC's faculty and staff. Statesville High School's JROTC will present and retire the colors.
