This marks the eighth straight year West Iredell's football team has qualified for the postseason, but something unlike the previous seven is in store this go-round.
You might call it the road less traveled.
West (5-6) is headed to the Appalachian Mountains to face Asheville (9-0-1) in the first round of the 3A playoffs Friday night. Admission is $7.
Since their current playoff-qualifying streak began in 2002, the Warriors have been on more flat land in early November. Playoff stops have included the following counties: Catawba, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Surry and Union.
"A lot of these boys haven't been to the mountains," said Benjamin Johnson, West's defensive line coach who signals in the plays from the sideline. "It will be a new atmosphere for a lot of our kids. Number one, you're going to have the cold. And then you're going to have the thin air, the altitude. It's going to be a little rough for them. We'll try to do the best we can to prepare them for that.
"Hopefully it's a good trip. Hopefully we win the ballgame."
