AA Harmony man was charged after authorities said he ran away on foot when a deputy was checking on two suspicious people at a store.
Daniel Joey Mitzel, 21, of Harmony was charged with resisting, obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, assault on a governmental official and possession of an open container of alcohol.
Sheriff Phil Redmond said Sgt. Randall Chilton of the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) team answered a call about a suspicious vehicle at Barker's Log Cabin store in Harmony Monday night.
Chilton noticed two people, both of whom were drinking, Redmond said. He conducted a pat down search of the man, later identified as Mitzel, and found cocaine in his pockets, the sheriff said.
Mitzel, he said, pushed Chilton and ran, and Chilton ran after the man, who went into a wooded area.
Sgt. Tim Byrd of the ACE team used his canine, Max, to search the area, and found the suspect in the back yard of a residence on Mt. Bethel Road, Redmond said. Byrd issued a warning that Max would be released if the suspect didn't surrender, but he refused to do so, Redmond said
Max was sent after the suspect, and the dog bit Mitzel during the apprehension, Redmond said. Mitzel was treated for the injury from the dog bite.
Redmond said the woman also fled the scene, but warrants for resisting and obstructing an officer and possession of an open container of alcohol were issued for Jennifer Nicole Chauncey, 22.
