Family flees burning house

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Three adults and one child escaped from a burning house early Thursday morning.

The house, located in the 300 block of Turnersburg Road, was heavily damaged by the fire.

Iredell County Assistant Fire Marshal Tommy Moore said the fire began in the downstairs of the two-story home.

A man lived in the bottom floor while his uncle, a woman and a child lived upstairs, Moore said.

Early Thursday morning, the man living downstairs was awakened by shouts from his nephew, who told him the house was on fire.

The man opened his bedroom door, saw flames and shut the door. He then escaped from the house through his bedroom window.

The two adults and child in the upstairs portion escaped by crawling out of a window as well, Moore said.

Moore said the fire started around a space heater in the living room, but he is still investigating to determine the exact cause.

He said he has not been able to talk to the people living upstairs yet.

Moore said the downstairs resident indicated he didn't hear a smoke detector, and the upstairs smoke detector wasn't working.

Moore said the living room is destroyed and there was smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the structure.

Firefighters were able to salvage some clothing and other belongings, he said.

Moore estimated damage to the house at $50,000 to $60,000.

Ebenezer, Trinity, Cool Spring and Statesville fire departments, as well as the Iredell County Rescue Squad and Mobile Air Unit, responded.
