Warriors hoops team now at full strength

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The regular season gets under way Monday for West Iredell's boys basketball team as it hosts Davie County in a nonconference game.

Coach Benjamin Johnson added a handful of football players to his roster after the Warriors' season drew to a close last Friday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs with a 46-8 loss to Asheville.

The majority of those somewhat late arrivals are sophomore players.

"Big playmakers, I would say," noted Johnson.

But one of the talented football-turned basketball players isn't an underclassman.

"P.J. Clyburn is playing basketball this year," Johnson said happily.

Skepticism loomed over whether Clyburn would play basketball his senior year because the 6-foot-2 standout defender and kick/punt returner is mulling several Division I football scholarship offers.

With his chiseled physique, Clyburn gives West Iredell a strong presence in the paint. He isn't the most prolific scorer, but he rebounds and defends well.
