Three Iredell hospitals will be audited by the N.C. State Health Plan to see if they were overpaid for outpatient health-care services.
The N.C. State Health Plan Board of Trustees received an update this week on an ongoing audit of 91 hospitals statewide.
N.C. State Health Plan spokeswoman Linda McCrudden said the audit is being conducted because the state's employee health benefits provider discovered some overpayments during a five-year period ending in June 2008.
The audit update reported that more than $2.5 million was overpaid to six hospitals, including Gaston Memorial Hospital, during that time period.
Iredell Memorial Hospital, Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and Davis Regional Medical Center are on the list, along with 52 other hospitals, to be reviewed in the future.
Iredell Health Systems spokeswoman Kelly Daspit and LNRMC spokeswoman Leigh Whitfield said it was too soon to comment.
The Attorney General's office has issued letters on behalf of the N.C. State Health Plan requesting refunds.
Gaston Memorial was overpaid $54,659.02 for its services.
Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro had the largest overpayment, $1.03 million.
Approximately 30 hospitals have been cleared and do not require further review.
