There were areas West Iredell boys basketball coach Benjamin Johnson felt his players could improve on, but, overall, he liked what he saw in the Warriors' 58-52 season-opening win Monday over Davie County.
"I'm not asking them to go out there and be like all these NBA athletes and all that stuff," he said. "As long as they play within themselves, play within the team concept, we can do good things, and I think they did that."
West built an 11-point first quarter lead against Davie County. The War Eagles fought back to take the lead three times in the third quarter, but the Warriors were able to regain control in a tight battle with a critical 9-2 run late in the fourth quarter.
Led by Zach Follrod's 10 boards, the Warriors outrebounded Davie County 35-29 and they com-mitted 10 turnovers to the War Eagles' 17.
One stat that didn't look so nice for West: 3-for-16 from the 3-point line (19 percent).
Even though a few of those shots looked forced, Johnson opted not to fault his players' decision making.
"I told the kids if they get open looks, take it," Johnson said. "Our open looks didn't fall."
