After decades of bringing joy to Iredell County's foster children, the Lonely Children's Fund has reached a milestone: 50 years of giving.
The Department of Social Services program, which raises money to purchase Christmas gifts and pay other expenses for foster children, began in 1960. And the need for the fund has grown since then.
Director Donald Wall said the number of children in foster care has surged since last year.
"We have a lot more foster children this year than last year," he said.
This year's goal of $33,000 is an increase from last year because of the greater need for additional donations.
According to the DSS, an all-time high of 212 foster children are currently receiving services this year.
There are 77 preschool-aged children, 81 children ages 6 to 12 and 46 teenagers under foster care in Iredell County.
At the end of the fund drive, money will be given to foster parents to purchase Christmas gifts for the children in their care.
Wall said the program is a "worthwhile program that really warms the heart."
"I'm amazed the community has rallied to support the children in foster care," he said.
