Inmate found dead in cell at Iredell jail

»  Comments | Post a Comment

An inmate in the Iredell County Detention Center died Saturday night after hanging himself with a bed sheet.
Iredell County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Rick Dowdle said the man was in an isolation cell.
Dowdle said he couldn't release the man's name pending completion of the investigation.
He said a detention officer making a routine cell check discovered the man hanging in the cell around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Dowdle said in the initial investigation indicates the man tore up bed sheets, and tied them together to use to hang himself.
He said a suicide note was found in the cell.
The man was brought into the jail on Oct. 20.
Dowdle said the sheriff's office is doing an internal investigation, but since there are no signs of foul play, the State Bureau of Investigation is not involved.
He said the state jail inspector's office has been notified as is standard procedure.
