Wildcats claim revenge

Lake Norman got the soccer rematch and results it wanted Wednesday.

The visiting Wildcats punched in a pair of goals in each half, both coming courtesy of the same source, and avenged an earlier-season home loss with a 2-1 victory over Mooresville.

It was the regular-season and I-Meck Conference finale for both teams.

"Man," said Jon Mertes, Lake Norman's head coach, "I sure don't want to see them any time soon again. We said a month ago that we would have them again. We came out on top tonight."

By doing so, the Wildcats (13-6-2 overall, 8-4 I-Meck) personally and favorably broke the tie with Mooresville (15-6-1, 7-5) for second place in the league standings.

Mallard Creek also entered Wednesday with a 7-4 conference record.

"It was battle,'' assured Steve Stith, Mooresville's head coach. "Defensively, I think we played well enough to win. Our offense is in a sort of reaction mode right now. We've got some time to work on that."

Lake Norman junior Jordan Chillson netted both goals for the winners, each of them giving the guests the lead.

Chillson tallied the first marker barely five minutes into the match in the first half, and his second strike broke a 1-1 tie as the clock hit the 27-minute mark of the second 40-minute half.

"Jordan played well for us all season,'' praised Mertes. "He was just in the right place at the right time twice to get our goals."

On Mooresville's behalf, it was able to forge a 1-1 tie early in the second half on the strength of senior forward Danner McCulloh's 12th goal of the season.

Both schools will make their 4A playoff debuts when the postseason starts next week.
