The Jimmie Johnson Foundation is partnering with the Lowe's Toolbox for Education program to offer $150,000 in grants for local school districts.
Four regional school districts — Iredell-Statesville Schools, Mooresville Graded School District, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Cabarrus County Schools — are eligible to apply for the grants.
The competitive grants, which have been named Champions Grants, will range from $25,000 to $100,000, a portion of which schools can apply to receive.
"Every opportunity for grant funding schools and PTOs can apply for they're jumping on," said I-SS Partnerships Coordinator Susie Wiberg.
If schools or parent-teacher organizations are interested in applying for the funds they must do so before the application deadline Oct. 16.
According to Wiberg, schools within the district can apply at their own free will, but she anticipates many of them will.
"I think people are going to jump on it," she said.
The grant targets kindergarten through 12th-grade educational programs.
Johnson, a three-time Sprint Cup champion NASCAR driver, and his wife Chandra are providing similar grants in California and Oklahoma. The couple will give away more than $500,000 to some school districts in several parts of the country.
"This year we felt that education was the right place to focus our fundraising efforts," Jimmie Johnson said in a press release. "I think it's important to make sure we give teachers and students the best tools possible and hopefully, these grants will help."
The mission of the foundation is to help children, families and communities in need throughout the United States, according to the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Web site.
