Davidson Parks and Recreation, along with the Huntersville and Cornelius Recreation Departments, are coming together to offer Archery and Irish step-dancing classes for home-schoolers.
"It's a great social activity for them as well as being physically active," said Recreation Program Supervisor Sharon Williams. "We want them to try new experiences, so we pick classes based off of the kids' interests and what the parents suggest. Archery has been really well-received."
Archery classes, which cost $25, are held on Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and run from Sept. 9-30. Beginner and intermediate classes are offered by Sterling Martin for ages 8 to 14 at Fisher Farm Park and equipment is provided.
"Our goals are to help the kids experiment with new sports, find out what they're interested in and maybe help them develop a new interest in a sport or hobby," Williams said.
Step-dancing is lead by local teen Sarah Fischer, who has had 11 years of dancing experience. The class is offered for ages 7 to 12 from 1-2 p.m. Sept. 9-30, Oct. 7-28 and Nov. 4-25 for $35 per session.
Parents who are interested in finding out more on classes offered can go to http://www.ci.davidson.nc.us/ and click on the Parks and Recreation link, or call 704 892-3349.
The Lowe's YMCA will also offer home-school P.E. classes starting on Sept. 9. The classes run in four-week sessions with different themes each month. September's theme is basketball, October's is soccer and November's is Ultimate Frisbee.
"Our home-school P.E. classes are for ages 5 to 17, and we work on developing not only the physical fitness, but the social aspect and the spiritual, for overall health," said Jennifer Wendt, YCommunity Marketing Director. "We pick our themes based on traditional P.E. classes, what's in a regular school session and what's popular and fun for the kids."
Some of the unique classes that will be offered during the school year are team-building, which will focus on working together with different activities and yoga.
"We want to throw in a few things that you can't get in a normal P.E. class, just to make it fun," she said.
The YMCA home-school class typically gets 10 to 15 students during their monthly sessions, Wendt said.
To sign up for the home-school class, stop by the Lowe's YMCA front desk, 170 Joe V. Knox Ave.
