Toastmasters forming club for local teachers

»  Comments | Post a Comment

More than a dozen years ago, Pam Christopher noticed she had an ability to reel her students in with stories about her childhood.

That knack for storytelling has evolved into Christopher becoming an internationally recognized public speaker.

A former Iredell-Statesville Schools teacher, she has been elected to serve as one of 18 international directors of Toastmasters, an organization dedicated to helping its members hone their communication and leadership skills.

"It's really an honor to be selected," Christopher said.

Her duties will include attending all board meetings at Toastmasters International in California, participating in a committee to formulate a plan for Toastmasters inclusion in social networking sites, decide on policies, attend district events, and more.

Christopher, who lives in Union Grove, will serve in this capacity for 2009-2011.

She is a former district governor for the state. During her tenure, the district she served ranked No. 1 in North America and No. 9 internationally in 2007-08.

The organization is ideal for those looking to brush up on their public speaking skills and presentations.

"If you have a fear of public speaking and need help in creating speeches or with sales presentations, Toastmasters can help," she said.

I-SS Toastmasters Club

Christopher will be part of the local Toastmasters group, Crossroads of the Carolinas, which is forming a club for I-SS teachers.

The kick-off meeting will be held Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. at A.D.R.

Teachers interested in participating should attend and will have to pay a small joining fee.

Christopher said it's a great learning opportunity for teachers to expand their communication skills outside the classroom.

Teachers interested in participating should contact Partnerships Coordinator Susie Wiberg at (704) 924-2025.

The Crossroads of the Carolinas Toastmasters Club meets every Friday at 11:45 a.m. at Chamber of Commerce.
