Think pink. That will be the color of the day Thursday during the annual – but newly named – Mooresville Women's Golf Association's 2009 Marie B. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament.
Pink will be the color associated with the primary benefitting cause of the affair on tap to tee off in the form of a complete-field 9 a.m. shotgun start tomorrow at the host Mooresville Municipal Golf course.
The event will also be used to help tee off – literally – October that has been designated as breast cancer awareness month. Pink is the traditional color to help bring that theme to light.
The well-known Rally For A Cure event has been re-identified effective this year in memory of the late Marie Smith, a former officer as well as longtime member of the MWGA that is officially yet again filling the role of tournament hostess.
The field will also be comprised of a healthy number of current and active MWGA members as well as any and all others wishing to participate. The field is open to both female and male participants.
Cost of playing is the same $60 per player fee that has been in place for most of the event's longstanding run. The fee covers all golf related expenses as well as breakfast, lunch, and other refreshments throughout play.
Team stroke play will be held in the form of a captain's choice format in which all members of a four-player team can contribute. Each team member hits each shot from the best result of each previous shot. Low scores are usually the norm.
Teams finishing in the top three spots within each of the flights will all receive awards.
In addition to the team competition, on-course events will be held in the form of closest-to-the-pin contests on par-three-holes and a long drive challenge separate for both men and women in the field.
A host of door prizes will also be made available courtesy of a healthy number of tournament sponsors. There will also be other prizes up for grabs that those in the field have the option of winning.
Again this year, all proceeds realized from the affair will go to benefit the Susan G. Komen for a Cure organization that raises funds for the continued effort to fight against breast cancer.
Last year's affair, maintaining a similar showing of all previous such tournaments, raised in excess of $13,000 for its cause. At least that much is expected to be added to the total this year.
The local Rally presents all of its earnings to the local-based affiliate of the Komen Foundation, assuring that its monies will be used to assist those in the immediate Mooresville and surrounding area.
Though a full field is expected, it's possible that a limited number of playing positions may still be available All still interested in participating may arrive at the host MMGC early tomorrow morning to find out if additional participating positions are in place.
