Vance Hotel's contents to be up for sale

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Every plate, tapestry and chair in the Vance Hotel will be for sale in two weeks.
Beginning Sept. 19, current owner Dr. Thomas Wilson will hold the Historic Vance Hotel Furniture Liquidation Sale to offload the furniture in the historic hotel on the corner of Front and Center Streets.
During this time, the general public can peruse some of the items on display in the two dining rooms on the ground floor that have been kept behind locked doors.
Wilson is preparing to sell all the contents of the hotel right down to the books in the Library bar.
Caretaker Wade Ikard said the hotel is under contract for sale, but didn’t disclose the buyer or the future plans for the building. He mentioned that a bar and restaurant would be included on the ground floor.
“This is the closest it’s been to being sold than ever before,” he said.
Wilson purchased the property in 2008 from Statesville City Councilman Cecil Stallard. According to the hotel’s appraisal card on Iredell County’s website, the hotel is worth $926,710.
In addition to a hotel, the Vance was at one time a retirement home and was also one of the sets in downtown Statesville for the movie Leatherheads starring George Clooney and Renee Zellweger.
Ikard took the R&L on a brief tour to look at the artwork, dressers, desks and appliances that are for sale. The items, which also included several beds, headboards, lamps and cocktail glasses, appeared to be in good shape.
Ikard said the mattresses couldn’t be resold, but they would probably be donated.
All proceeds will be divided equally between Wilson and an unnamed South Statesville ministry.
Ikard said the next two weeks will be spent appraising the furniture. He is researching each piece to assess what a fair price will be.
“There are some great pieces of furniture here,” he said. “Things that are original. It held up pretty well for being closed up.”
Some of the furniture that occupied the more than 70 rooms has been given away to either victims of Hurricane Katrina or others in need, Ikard said.
The light fixtures will probably remain. Ikard said the prospective owner wants to keep the building true to its historical roots.
They are interested in keeping the original elements of the building, including the doorway from the lobby to the dining room.
People can only use cash to purchase items, Ikard said.
