Candidate wants to put a focus on seniors

A Mooresville senior care community representative on Tuesday became the second person to unofficially challenge for a seat on the Iredell County Board of Commissioners.

Stuart Madow, 46, who says he has registered as an unaffiliated voter for the past 25 years, joins Republican Dennis Moody -- also of Mooresville -- as candidates for one of three seats on the Iredell board.

In a press release announcing his candidacy, Madow said key issues facing the county are matters related to transportation, zoning, employment and business development.

He also noted a report projecting Iredell to be one of the top three counties in the state in the rate of growth of the senior population.

"We must insure our seniors have the services in place that they have earned," said Madow, the Community Service representative for Home Instead Senior Care in Iredell County.

He said he feels he has "a unique perspective on the county" because of his extensive travel within in.
"In my profession I speak with healthcare professionals, family caregivers, and senior citizens on a daily basis," he said. "In any given week I spend time talking to people in all parts of the county.

"It's not unusual for me to have a breakfast meeting in Troutman, visit colleagues later in the morning in Statesville, conduct afternoon appointments in Harmony, back for more meetings in Statesville, and end up the day at a Chamber of Commerce event down in Mooresville."

Madow also said he wants to see improvements in the communication between the county and municipal officials.

"It is shocking to me that the County Commissioners have met with the Town of Mooresville Commissioners once in a ten-year period of time," he said. "I believe open communication is the key to successful government."

Madow is the founder and facilitator of the South Iredell Healthcare Forum that brings together over 50 healthcare providers each month to share educational presentations, business networking, and to work on common healthcare issues facing the county.

He is the chairperson of the Iredell County Alzheimer's Memory Walk held in Troutman each October that helps raise funds and bring awareness to Alzheimer's disease.

While Madow and Moody say they're seeking a seat on the board, first-term commissioner Scott Keadle says he's leaving to pursue the 10th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives now held by Patrick McHenry.

In addition to Keadle -- who was elected in 2008 and earned only a two-year term by finishing third in the race -- the four-year terms of Commissioners Steve Johnson and Marvin Norman also expire this year. Johnson is the senior member of the current board, having first been elected in 1994.
Norman is serving his second four-year term.

Neither man -- both Republicans -- has made an official announcement about running to keep their seats. Filing period begins next Monday.
