Plaques will tout historic properties

Identifying Mooresville's historic homes, businesses and landmarks just got a bit easier thanks to a new program from the town's Historic Preservation Commission.

The Historically Contributing Property program – a brainchild of the Mooresville Historic Preservation Commission (MHPC) – officially kicked off on Monday, though the program began awarding several historic town homes with plaques late last year.

In December, the MHPC handed out 20 plaques to Mooresville residents whose homes or businesses were featured on the organization's Annual Tour of Homes. These buildings were identified by the MHPC as historically, architecturally or culturally significant to the town.

The plaques, which were specially designed and include the year the property was built, are meant to be displayed at the outside of each building. Not only will they allow passersby to better find these historic locations, but they serve as a "thank you" from the MHPC to the home- and business owners who help "Mooresville preserve and recognize its rich history."

"Handing out the plaques kicked off our plaque program in great fashion," said Brent Zande, MHPC chairman.

"By displaying these plaques, Mooresville can not only embrace and enhance the character of these grand, historic homes, residents and businesses can be proud their buildings are playing a monumental role in helping Mooresville define its legacy."

According to the MHPC, the plaque program has two clear purposes: Identifying and evaluating potential landmarks and districts, and helping the organization develop Mooresville's preservation goals.

Said Zande, "We are tasked to preserve and protect the historical significance of the town of Mooresville."

He added, "We want the residents and business owners to realize that their homes or commercial properties can help Mooresville preserve its past and shape its future."
