After being named regional principal of the year, Mooresville High School's Todd Wirt is among eight administrators statewide vying for North Carolina Principal of the Year.
"I feel very honored to receive this recognition," Wirt said. "It is validation for the great work that we are doing at MHS."
Mooresville Graded School District officials announced Wednesday that Wirt had been selected as the Northwest Region Principal of the Year and will advance to the state-level selection process of the North Carolina Wachovia Principal of the Year.
"Mr. Wirt's leadership has been instrumental in the successful deployment of the Digital Conversion Initiative that provides laptops for all of the Mooresville High School students and he has led changes that have increased achievement and total school morale," said Dreisa Sherrill, MGSD director of human resources.
Wirt, who is in his third year as principal at MHS, was selected to represent the Northwest Region, which includes Iredell, Rowan, Davie, Yadkin, Surry, Alleghany, Wilkes, Alexander, Catawba, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Watauga and Avery counties.
The regional selection process requires an extensive portfolio compiled by each principal that is reviewed by a selection committee in each education region.
"Regional selection committees read and evaluate each candidate's portfolio, and personally interview each to name a regional winner and a finalist," notes information from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Web site.
Wirt and the other seven finalists will have their portfolios reviewed by a statewide selection committee and undergo another interview. Additionally, the selection committee will visit each candidate's school campus as they make their decision.
The 2010 North Carolina Wachovia Principal of the Year will be announced at an April 10 luncheon in Raleigh.
"The statewide Wachovia Principal of the Year receives $3,000 for personal or professional use, and his or her school also receives $3,000 for educational equipment or materials. Each of the eight regional winners receives $1,000 for personal use and $1,000 for the school," notes DPI.
Since 1984, 29 state Wachovia Principals of the Year have been named with 186 regional award recipients.
