As many as three area athletes, all from Mooresville and Lake Norman High Schools, could play key roles this season for Catawba College's baseball program.
Former Lake Norman High School pitchers Nick Lomascolo and Ross Whitley and former Mooresville catcher Aaron Meadows have all joined the Indians, one of the top Division II programs.
Of the three, it's perhaps Lomascolo who is receiving the most attention.
A standout on the mound throughout his prep career, Lomascolo is currently slated as a starter in the three- or four-man rotation by Catawba's pitching coaches.
A crafty lefthander, Lomascolo was an instrumental member of Lake Norman's 2009 team that hit the program's high-water mark by earning the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 3A class championship crown.
Lomascolo was named the Most Valuable Player of the state 3A class title series and was the R&L county baseball player of the year in 2009 after setting numerous season and career records for the Wildcats.
His former Lake Norman teammate Whitley is in the running to see some early innings out of the bullpen. Like most freshmen, Whitley expects to embark on his college career as a spot reliever, waiting his turn for a shot as a starter.
Whitley, too, helped form part of the staff on Lake Norman's state title team while also handling duties for the record-breaking American Legion Moors as well last spring and summers, respectively.
Also a freshman, Meadows is being considered, at least during the very early stages of the season, for spending a few innings as Catawba's catcher.
Meadows batted .408 while driving in 21 runs last year for the Blue Devils, splitting time between catcher and pitcher.
