Carl Russell Daye of Statesville was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson said a citizen living on Davie Avenue noticed a man looking into the vehicles in the area and called police.
Statesville police officers responded and found a man fitting the description on Stockton Street, Anderson said.
Police spoke with him and, eventually patted him down, finding an owner's manual for a BMW.
Officers found the registration as well, and went to the 500 block of Davie Avenue, Anderson said.
There they found the owner's manual had been taken from an unlocked BMW, Anderson said.
