Three Iredell county teams made the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team wrestling playoffs, and two will stay at home in the opening rounds.
I-Meck 4A winner Lake Norman and Mooresville will both host the first and second rounds when the postseason gets under way today. North Iredell, the North Piedmont 3A champion, will take to the road against Mount Pleasant.
In wrestling, the first two rounds are done at the same site on the same day. Four teams will wrestle on two mats during the opening round, and the winners will meet a few minutes after the first round is over.
At 31-4 overall, the Wildcats appear to be the favorite to advance into Thursday's third and fourth rounds. The first matches today at Lake Norman are scheduled to begin around 5:30 p.m.
Lake Norman hosts Myers Park (10-12) in the first round. The Mustangs are the No. 2 seed from the Southwestern 4A Conference and have lost to a handful of teams the Wildcats beat this year.
The winner of that match will wrestle either T.C. Roberson (26-6) or Olympic (19-3) immediately following. The Rams are the top seed from Mountain Athletic Conference while Olympic is a wild-card entry.
Mooresville drew East Gaston (16-10) in the first round, and it should be a pretty even matchup. Both teams lost to Lake Norman by similar margins this year.
If the Blue Devils advance, they would wrestle Parkland (37-0) or Porter Ridge (28-9) following.
First-round matches at Mooresville today are scheduled for 5 p.m.
The NPC-champion Raiders (24-2) open the playoffs against Mount Pleasant (21-5), with the first round taking place at Southwestern Randolph.
The winner will wrestle either Southwestern Randolph (39-2) or Charlotte Catholic (11-3). Both teams are champions of their respective divisions.
