Dennis Moody, a computer systems analyst in Mooresville and treasurer of the Iredell County Republican Party, announced Wednesday his candidacy for the Iredell County Board of Commissioners in November.
Moody will seek to replace Commissioner Scott Keadle, who plans to challenge fellow Republican Patrick McHenry for the latter's 10th district Congressional seat.
Moody, 45, said he wants to "continue to provide Iredell County with strong, conservative leadership; to work diligently to keep taxes low; and to advocate the protection of personal property rights tempered by a philosophy of orderly growth."
He is the first candidate to toss a hat in the ring for a seat on the five-member, all-Republican county board. The seats of two current commissioners, Marvin Norman and Steve Johnson, will also be on November's ballot. Neither has yet announced his intention to run.
The candidate filing period for county elections opens Feb. 8 at noon and closes Feb. 26. In addition to choosing three county commissioners, voters will elect a sheriff, clerk of court and register of deeds. The Mooresville-area's District 7 seat on the Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education will also be up for grabs.
There are no Town of Mooresville or Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education elections this year.
In a press release Wednesday announcing his candidacy, Moody said, "In these difficult economic times it is absolutely vital that we continue to keep taxes low and limit government growth.
"We also need to continue to be diligent in our efforts to bring real jobs and industry to Iredell County. In order to achieve these goals we need to continue to have strong, level-headed leaders with a clear and steady resolve on the Iredell County commission."
Describing himself as a "staunch fiscal and social conservative," Moody said he supports "the right to life, the protection of traditional marriage, low taxes, less government, and the protection of our Second Amendment rights of the Constitution."
Moody is a self employed information systems and data security consultant.
He previously worked for Jack Henry & Associates, Inc., a technology provider for the financial services industry. A graduate of UNC-Charlotte, he holds a degree in psychology.
Moody and his wife, Kate, have three children and are members of Peninsula Baptist Church in Mooresville.
