Looking for a nighttime event before putting the kids to bed?
The Mooresville Public Library recently kicked off its "Pajama Story Time" each Monday and Tuesday night, encouraging kids and their parents to join them for a few tales and songs before settling in at home for the evening.
Held at 7 p.m. in the library's Youth Services Department, the program is free and open to kids up to 12 years old, though officials note the event is best suited for even younger children.
"Come in after supper. It'll help get your kids settled in before bedtime," said Megan Mosher, a library assistant who hosts the Monday program. Another assistant reads each Tuesday.
Mosher said the library first held "Pajama Story Time" last summer. After realizing it was "a really big hit," and per the request of parents seeking evening activities, the MPL began another session of the program on Jan. 4.
Only three weeks in, Mosher said kids have slowly been trickling in for story time, though she hopes more will join the groups each week.
For Rebecca Clark, Monday's event was the first storytime she and her daughter, 3-year-old Wheeler, attended at the library, though they plan to participate again.
"We happened to see the calendar when we checked out books last week," said Clark after watching and helping her daughter learn three sign-language signs to accompany the evening's three books.
The program typically lasts around one-half hour, said Mosher, and is perfect for families who cannot attend the library's daytime events. Kids are also invited to wear their favorite pajamas each night.
And as a parent to two young children, Mosher noted that this type of quiet activity – whether at home
or at the library – is ideal for children shortly before bedtime. "For me, it gets my daughter in a routine and I'm helping advance her literacy skills."
