We hope you will read the column on today's Viewpoint page, written by Mooresville resident Stan Thompson. He is in Istanbul, Turkey, this week for the International Hydrail Conference, furthering the cause of hydrogen technology as a greener way to propel the world's commuter trains.
Whether you support or oppose our area's ongoing effort to establish commuter train lines, including one from Mooresville to Charlotte, you have to admire the determined effort to wean trains from diesel fuels to cleaner hydrogen-based fuels.
Thompson, an occasional columnist for the Tribune, is among the leading champions of hydrail technology in the world. He even coined the term. He is determined to see the development of hydrogen-powered trains – which are gaining popularity around the world, but lagging here – continue.
This week's international conference in Turkey, one of the latest European nations to embrace hydrogen technology, may only advance the cause a few steps. But those are becoming big steps, especially considering the first such international gathering occurred just five years ago. The event now has the involvement and attention of countries throughout Europe and Asia. Canada is embracing it, and the United States government is becoming more interested every year.
Whether we all embrace the concept of commuter rail in the Charlotte area or not, we should admire and support the determined efforts of people like Stan Thompson who are seeking to lead the world's transportation industry to a cleaner place.
