Lake Norman's season ended in the 4A Western Regional semifinals Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center with a 69-54 loss to East Mecklenburg, the state's top-ranked 4A team.

East Meck scored 14 of the first 15 points of the second quarter and outscored the Wildcats 18-6 altogether in the period to seize control with a 34-22 halftime lead. Lake Norman was never able to fully recover.

The Wildcats (24-6) were making their first appearance in the regionals in the program's eight-year history.

East Meck moves on to Saturday's regional final.

The Eagles (28-2) will play Butler (23-4), a 69-43 winner over previously once-beaten McDowell (27-2) in the other semifinal Thursday night. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Aliyah Kilpatrick and Monet Tellier, who's committed to Virginia Tech, each scored seven points in the second quarter, and both had 11 points at the break.

Kilpatrick finished with a game-high 21 points, and Tellier added 20.

Haynes, one of six Lake Norman seniors playing their final game, led the Wildcats with 18 points.

JoBeth Wright, also playing the final game of her career, supplied another 12 for Lake Norman. The senior was 3-for-3 from the 3-point line.

The Wildcats never got closer than nine points in the second half.
