In response to the current budget crisis affecting Iredell County Government the commissioners directed Iredell County manager, Joel Mashburn to develop a plan to reduce expenditures in the Environmental Health On-Site Water Protection program, which does well, and septic system permits.
Mr. Mashburn recently met with Donna Campbell, Iredell County Health Director and David Hinson, Environmental Health Supervisor. After careful and deliberate thought to its impact on staff, programs and services in the health department, a decision was made to eliminate three On-Site Water Protection positions effective March 24.
Joel Mashburn said, "The terminations are regrettable; however, unless there is a very rapid upward swing in construction, there will be others to follow in some of the other departments."
The health department has had to freeze many vacant positions in response to the economic downturn. Even with these frozen positions, the economic downturn continued to adversely impact the on-site water protection division, which resulted in the reduction of force. The Iredell County Health Department has 17 frozen positions including 9 in the Environmental Health division.
"It was such a difficult decision to reduce the amount of staff in our on-site water program- they are fine people and have contributed a lot to Iredell County" said Donna Campbell. The On-Site Water Protection services will continue to be provided by the remaining Iredell County Health Department Environmental Health staff.
