Mooresville's Public Utilities Division is joining with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense program to promote "Fix a Leak Week," March 15-21.

The public education program encourages property owners to check their plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks.

"Less than 1% of the water on the earth can be used for drinking water," said Public Services Director John Vest. "The Town of Mooresville is committed to protecting and conserving this precious resource by providing consumer education and awareness of "Fix a Leak Week," as well as implementing a leak detection and repair program for our water system.

Water Facts Worth Knowing:
An average American home can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets and other household leaks. That is enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.
Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water or more per day.
Common leaks found in the home include leaking toilet flappers, dripping faucets and other leaking valves. Fixing these leaks can save more than 10 percent on their water bills.
More than one trillion gallons of water leak from U.S. homes each year.
Keep your home leak-free by repairing dripping faucets, toilet valves and shower heads. In most cases, fixture replacement parts do not require a major investment and can be installed without a professional contractor. Another way to eliminate leaks and save money is by using high-efficiency appliances.
Town officials encourage water users to check for leaks by monitoring water usage. "Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak," said Vest.
