Rain or shine, more than 900 individuals from Mooresville and surrounding communities are coming together through Sunday to bring Hope Park to life.
Construction on Hope Park at the Lowe's YMCA in Mooresville started Wednesday with 190 people shoveling dirt, anchoring support beams and assembling play structures to create the town's largest playground.
Sarah Dumser, an organizer of the five-day build, said more than 900 community members were signed up for one or more shifts between Wednesday and Sunday, when construction is slated for completion.
"We only have the five days to do the project, so it will be done," she said, noting that only thunder will stall the build.
The custom-designed Hope Park will include a "Tot-Lot" for ages 2-5 and an area for older kids that is equipped with swings, slides, climbing apparatus and other unique attractions. The park will provide fun for the entire family with picnic shelters, a memorial garden and a "run through" spray fountain as well.
Funded primarily by two non-profit organizations, private donations and multiple sponsorships, the monetary goal of $500,000 remains $150,000 short, leaving some aspects of the playground -- such as the water-spray park -- still unfunded.
However, donations are continually accepted via Hope Park's Web site.
Although all scheduled constructions shifts are full, Dumser said they'll never turn away a helping hand.
