Statesville catcher Sean Young took advantage of one pitch that missed its location and let pitcher Casey Liles do the rest.
Young turned on a fastball that caught too much of the plate and smacked a three-run homer in the fifth inning Friday as the Greyhounds came from behind to beat South Iredell 7-6.
The Vikings led 4-0 after three innings and were up 4-3 to start the bottom of the fifth.
Ethan Suarez hit a single, Skyler Stroud walked on five pitches and Young hit the first pitch he saw over the fence.
"I came up looking to see a fastball and just trying to get a good pitch to hit," Young said. "Luckily for me, I got one and gave it a good shot."
Young's blast made it 6-5 Statesville, and it was 7-5 when the heart of South's lineup started the seventh inning.
Vikings senior Chris Dula hammered the first pitch he saw from Liles for a solo home run to make it 7-6, but the Greyhounds senior calmed himself down and shut down South.
Liles earned the win after coming in the game in relief for starter Sean Grant. He pitched 4 2-3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out seven.
"He came in and shut them down, and that's what we asked him to do," Young said. "Other than that one pitch to Dula, he was on point."
Dula finished 3-for-3 at the plate and also got on base with a walk. He scored three of the Vikings runs as well.
Tyler Marlowe took the loss for South after entering the game in the fourth inning. He pitched 2 1-3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.
Eric Hinceman got the start and pitched three innings for South, and Cory Cerven worked for two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
"I was pretty pleased with the way we played," South coach Trey Ramsey said. "We built an early lead, we took advantage of some mistakes and started eliminating our own defensive mistakes. We're finding a way to compete. We just have to continue to get better."
