High school's PTSO looks to expand, 'spread the work'

Hoping to get more parents involved at Mooresville High School, interim principal Michael Royal is looking to make the school’s Parent Teacher Student Organization more relevant.

“We’ve always had (a PTSO) but it hasn’t been a very strong group,” he said. “We just want to build on the foundation we have and build a strong team.”

Royal said all MHS parents are automatically a member of the PTSO, but that only 25 parents are involved this year -- and most of those are freshman parents.

“I’m excited because we had a goal to get 20 parents, but we’ve beaten that goal and we hope to keep going,” he said. “We’re looking for any volunteers to help and for parents to run and hold an office with in.” All 10 officer positions in the PTSO are still available and Royal said they will vote on these positions at the Nov. 1 meeting.

Royal hopes that with more parent involvement, the more activities can be created for students and staff.

Normally the PTSO awards a staff member or teacher each month and recognizes them with a breakfast. The first event the PTSO is hosting will be an Oct. 28 staff breakfast for the high school and N.F. Woods.

“We’ve always had a small group but we want a larger group to spread the work out,” Royal said. “It’s a lot of work for a few people to do and the more hand on deck the more activities we can offer.”

Other activities the PTSO is responsible for are getting together are a teacher appreciation week, activities for different classes and even supply teachers in need of classroom items.

The MHS PTSO meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Magnolia Annex cafeteria.

The group is also accepting donations and an informational table will be at the next home football game on Oct. 28.

Those who wish to volunteer with the upcoming staff breakfast can contact Michael Royal at 704- 658-2580 or email mroyal@mgsd.k12.nc.us.
