For the past eight years, the Mooresville Graded School District has sponsored various fundraisers to send students to Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.
This year, Mooresville Intermediate School is teaming with Jeff Goddard of Mobile Drug Testing to presenting a “Reels and Wheels” Drive-In Movie and Car Show. The throw-back event, akin to the drive-in movies of decades past, will begin Saturday at 5 p.m. at the school, and the public is invited.
The car show is from 5-7:30 p.m., with the drive-in movie – “Rio” – beginning at 8 p.m. in the parking lot behind the school. Admission is free and donations will be accepted.
“It’s a new twist on drive-in theaters,” Goddard said of the movie. “It’s similar to movies in the park with the giant inflatable movie screen. We’ll transmit audio via a set radio station that people can tune in to and listen to the movie from inside their cars.”
He also said sound will be piped through speakers for people who bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.
Last year, the MGSD sent approximately 250 people to the camp including 204 sixth graders. The three-day camp costs $320 per child. Teacher Maureen Tunnell, MIS Space Camp coordinator, said officials plan on taking about 180 students on February’s trip.
“We work so hard in helping kids earn money and we’ll gladly accept any other donations as well,” she said.
Money from food sold at Saturday’s event and donations from a 50/50 raffle will defray trip expenses for those sixth graders who attend the drive-in movie event.
Tunnell said the trip is offered to the entire sixth grade class. “It’s so important for them to get to go and to make sure that every child who wants to go can,” she said. “It’s a great learning experience for them and we prepare them for the camp as much as we can before we go.”
Students will be selling popcorn, hotdogs, chips, ice cream, water and candy. They started their fundraising efforts in September and have until January to raise money for their trip.
Students are also selling Butter Braids, Reading Sponsorships, spices from Chef Troy Gagliardo of Motown Spice Provisions, and will have an Applebee's Breakfast on Dec. 10.
So far, 50 cars have been signed up for the classic/custom car show. The entry fee is $20. “We could have up to 200 cars on display,” Goddard said. “I anticipate a good turnout so long as the weather holds out.”
All proceeds from the car show will also go to the Space Camp trip.
