The accolades and attention just keep on coming for the Mooresville Graded School District. Its conversion to digital learning – copied by school districts nationwide and documented in countless newspaper and magazine articles – received a bigger audience still on Monday.
The New York Times published a feature story on the MGSD’s laptop program and its high scores and graduation rate, describing the district as the “de facto national model of the digital school.”
However, Supt. Mark Edwards told the Times, “This is not about the technology. It’s not about the box. It’s about changing the culture of instruction — preparing students for their future, not our past.”
Added Karen Cator, director of educational technology for the U.S. Department of Education: “Other districts are doing things, but what we see in Mooresville is the whole package: using the budget, innovating, using data, involvement with the community and leadership. There are lessons to be learned.”
