Downtown Mooresville ending its 'Cruise-In'

After five years of celebrating hot rods, customs and vintage vehicles, the Downtown Mooresville Cruise-In is being retired.

Dennis Cowardin, chairman of the sponsoring Mooresville Downtown Commission, told the Tribune on Wednesday that with Cruise-In volunteer director Hugh Sykes retiring from the event, there was nobody else to keep it going.

“It was an incredible event and did great things for our town and downtown, but it takes so much work,” Cowardin said. “It was practically a full-time job for Hugh, taking months and months to organize” the monthly summertime gatherings of vintage and antique vehicles.

The MDC assumed Cruise-In operations three years ago, expanding it under Sykes’ direction.

Cowardin said the MDC has unsuccessfully sought someone to take the organizational reins from Sykes. “Without a coordinator who has a lot of time to put into it, this kind of event can’t exist,” Cowardin said.

But he offered a ray of hope.

"Hopefully, somebody who sees this will want to pick up (the Cruise-In) and keep it going,” he said.
