Walking to Lake Norman Elementary School is about to get a lot easier.
As part of the Safe Route to School Project, a contract for $168,912 was awarded last week to W.M. Warr & Son, Inc. by the Town of Mooresville to complete the Oak Tree Sidewalk Project.
About 7,000 feet of sidewalk will be installed on both sides of Oak Tree Road from Lake Norman Elementary to Brawley School Road. The sidewalk will tie into the existing sidewalk on Brawley.
The work will include curb and pavement restoration, tree removal and striping.
Jon Young, a town engineer, said the project’s completion date is not set yet.
“In the stage we’re at now, we’re still getting contracts signed before we meet with the contractor to set up a pre-con schedule of getting started,” he said.
Though a start date has not been decided, Young said the contract notes that the project must be completed 270 days from the time it begins.
Young noted that the project will be similar to work along Fieldstone and Magnolia roads, where sidewalks have been installed for the first time.
“We’re hoping this will be encouraging to kids and parents to get out and walk to school or to just get out and walk,” he said.
