About Newspapers in Education

Newspapers In Education (NIE) is a nationwide program whose purpose is to increase literacy of children by using the newspaper as a teaching tool. More than 700 newspapers in the US & Canada participate in the NIE program throughout the school year.

The Statesville Record & Landmark NIE program provides teachers with access to our newspaper for their classroom each week, access to lesson plans in conjunction with the newspaper at no cost to the teachers or the students. The Statesville R&L absorbs the costs of the program and relies on support from area businesses so educators may participate in the program at no cost.

Join with the community to help promote literacy and reading in our local schools!

The Statesville Record & Landmark and Mooresville Tribune, strong believers in education, have implemented Newspapers in Education to promote literacy and reading in our local schools.

We provide the papers at the lowest possible education rate, and with your donations every student can access the newspaper at no cost to him or her. By becoming a partner in our Newspapers in Education program your donation will help students to develop their reading ability, increase their social awareness, build character, enrich their civic education, and so much more.

Along with knowing that you are making an investment in your community, there are several other benefits related to corporate sponsorship. The benefits include: increased public recognition, enhanced public image and acknowledgement in the Statesville Record & Landmark and Mooresville Tribune.

Together we can make a difference in the quality of the education our children receive. Your donation will allow students and teachers access to the only textbook that is updated daily “the newspaper.”

Vacation newspapers

Donate your vacation newspapers – when you temporarily stop home delivery of the The Statesville Record & Landmark while you’re away, you can donate your papers to the NIE program.

Donate during the next Roundup

When you pay your next bill round off to the next dollar. The extra few cents will be used to buy newspapers for the schools. You will never miss it, but it all adds up for NIE.

- Newspapers Maintain the Brain - a teachers' guide to enhance basic skills.
- Newspapers Now - This guide provides a variety of lessons and activities to help students develop their comprehension and research skills.
- Now I Get It! - This guide provides a variety of lessons and activities to help students develop their comprehension skills. The materials are for both middle and high school students and special activities are included for elementary students.
- Press Ahead! - a teaching tool and a planning guide for creating a student newspaper. As a teaching tool, it provides background on the different sections and elements of a newspaper.
- Reading First NIE! - a teaching supplement for Reading First, No Child Left Behind Act 2001. Covers activities for children Pre-K through Grade 5 in these five areas: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Text Comprehension

Fundraising

Looking for a great way to raise hundreds of dollars for your school or club? The Statesville R&L has a fundraising program geared toward making money for your group with the option of rewarding the group member with money of their own!

Simply ask parents, family and neighbors to subscribe to their local paper. The Statesville R&L is filled each day with the local news, current events, editorials, specials from local businesses and valuable coupons. It is useful and valuable.
