The Special Olympics of Lake Norman program was proud to send a contingent of 17 athletes to compete in the North Carolina Special Olympics Fall Games this year. The fall games featured athletes competing in soccer, Bocce, golf, cycling and roller skating.

Lake Norman fielded two well-trained, four-player teams in the Bocce competition, along with a seasoned Ssoccer team — named by the athletes as the "Explosion." Bocce Team One had players John Coons, Marti Hill, Kim Tolbert and Chris Ware in competition. Bocce Team Two players were Zack Cooper, Brandy Kutschenko, Chris Stidd and James Wood.

The Lake Norman soccer team, the "Explosion," consisted of athletes Tina Brown, Tyler Deaton, Peter Knox, Regina Knox, Stephen Morley, Laura Portanova, Brianna Reed, Branson Severt and Matt Walton, all from the Mooresville area.

The first competition for Bocce Team One was made difficult early into the first game when a Lake Norman player developed a health problem. They still managed to play well enough with only three players on the field to make the Medal round. The next day, Team One played their hearts out, finishing with a Fourth Place ribbon.

Bocce Team Two played with skill and enthusiasm on the first day of competition and won two games, which put them into contention for the final round. In the Gold Medal round, Bocce Team Two faced stiff competition from Randolph County, but they prevailed in an expertly played game to win the Gold Medal for their team.

The "Explosion" soccer team showed some extraordinary play throughout their three games the first day, winning two of the three and propelling themselves into the next day's medal round. The team won a preliminary game which sent them to the Gold medal round final against the Wake "Tornadoes."

They played with great skill in the game and kept the score close throughout the match. The Explosion team members displayed great pride and satisfaction on the podium as they accepted their Silver medals.
