Mooresville is once again going to have a powerful cross country squad.
It’s just that the boys and girls teams are doing a flip-flop.
For the first time in his tenure as Blue Devils coach, Michael Royal has more experience — and higher overall numbers — on the girls side.
“That’s something exciting,” Royal said. “We’ve got three senior captains all coming back and we’ll return five of our top-seven from last year. From an experience perspective, the girls are pretty strong.”
Those three senior captains are Emily Nesbitt, Jessie Morgan and Catherine Campbell. All have extensive running experience.
Nesbitt was the top runner last year, and Morgan rebounded from an injury to make her way into the top-three. Campbell was in the top-seven and was also captain as a junior.
“All three have been a big part of our program,” Royal said. “Jessie was injured last year after being in our top-five. She worked her way into the top-three by the end of the year. She’s a competitive girl. She’ll probably be No. 2 at the beginning of the season.”
Junior Nicole Charnock climbed her way into the top-three last season and also returns.
Despite battling injuries, the Blue Devils finished 10th out of 18 teams at last year’s 4A West Regionals, which included state powers Asheville Roberson, Watauga, Ardrey Kell and Lake Norman.
