The Mooresville-based Lake Norman Soccer Club is going international, sort of.
LNSC Executive Director Philip Poole has joined the Puerto Rico men's national team as a part-time coach. Poole will be on the sidelines for the team’s next six FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
“It is a personal honor for me to be able to coach at the international level,” Poole said. “It is another opportunity for me to develop as a coach in new challenging and environment. I have coached at the professional, college, youth club and USYS Region III levels but never at the senior international level.
“I’m looking forward to this wonderful opportunity.”
It’s one that will not only benefit Poole's already impressive resume but could pay dividends for LNSC.
Poole plans to seek out youth coaches and clubs in Puerto Rico to partner with LNSC to provide new and innovative ways to better serve his players.
"It would be great to have youth players from Puerto Rico come and play in Mooresville or visa versa,’’ noted Poole. “Currently, LNSC teams travel to Europe every summer. We send teams over to Europe to experience the culture and compete against foreign players. I don't see why we couldn't go to Puerto Rico to do the same thing".
Poole holds a U.S.S.F National A license and NSCAA Premier Diploma. Poole has held numerous soccer roles and worked along some of the best coaches in the Nation including stints as an assistant coach with UNC Charlotte 49ers, Charlotte Eagles (USL) pro goalkeeper coach, director of goalkeeping for the NC ODP program, and is a member of the USYS Region III coaching staff.
Poole spent four years playing at Wingate University.
In his native England, Poole played as a youth player for Newcastle United before spending three seasons with Hull City AFC.
